About this coffee Duverney’s farm is located in an area that has historically been – and continues to be – heavily influenced by FARC adjacent guerilla groups, and Duverney speaks passionately about dealing with the volatile situation, helping his father as a child on his farm, and the struggles he and his family have faced in trying to grow coffee and getting it to market.
Duverney has two farms, Finca La España and Finca Montreal. This coffee comes from Finca Montreal, which is his main farm that he bought in 2018 from the money saved selling coffee cherries to middlemen between 2003 – 2017. The Geisha on Duverney’s farm comes from seeds procured directly from Panama’s famed La Esmeralda farm. Combined with Duverney’s university background in Agroforestry, knowledge which he applies to his farming practices, results in beautifully dynamic and expressive coffees.
For this lot, cherries were transported up the mountain using a garrucha – an ingenious cable car and pulley system – to Duverney’s house and wet mill. Cherries were sorted and sealed in 55-gallon drums for 30–40 hours before being pulped, sealed, and submerged in water for another 30–40 hours. The coffee was then thoroughly washed and dried on raised beds under parabolic shade for 20–25 days.
