About this coffee Joaquina Montoya Alvarado is a dedicated coffee farmer from Intibucá, Honduras, where she manages her sustainable, organic 12-hectare farm, Finca Los Pinos, at an altitude of 1650 meters. Joaquina oversees every aspect of her farm’s operations, from harvesting to processing and drying, ensuring exceptional coffee quality.

Her Geisha plants grow at the highest point of her farm, at 1770 meters above sea level, maturing slowly amidst natural forest. The ripe cherries are carefully picked and delivered to her son’s mill on his nearby farm. There, the cherries are sorted, pulped using an eco-pulper, and fermented in tanks for 18–22 hours, depending on weather conditions. A strong believer in intentional drying, Joaquina meticulously manages the process in a solar dryer, ensuring the beans reach an ideal moisture content of 10–11% over 20–25 days.

With over 35 years of experience in coffee production, Joaquina’s dedication and hard work have been pivotal in achieving remarkable success. This year, she entered her coffee into the Cup of Excellence program for the first time, earning an impressive 3rd place. Thanks to the encouragement of Ronny Gamez of RAGA Coffee and an international buyer impressed by her coffee’s exceptional quality, Joaquina took a leap of faith to compete and was rewarded for her efforts.

This year, Ricky had the honor of serving as the head judge for the preselection round of Honduras' 20th anniversary Cup of Excellence. Alongside the national jury cuppers, he evaluated all 218 submitted samples. The profile of this coffee stood out even during the preselection week. Later, during our community cupping event featuring the Top 10 winning coffees from the 2024 Honduras Cup of Excellence, we invited you, our customers, to share your favorite coffee on the table and the price you’d be willing to pay for a 6oz retail bag. This feedback helped guide us in determining our budget for a winning bid.

The overwhelming majority chose this stunning Washed Geisha, produced by Joaquina Montoya, (followed by #13 La Leona Oscar Edgardo Tinoco Madrid’s Natural Pacamara!) with many of you expressing a willingness to pay up to $40.00 per bag, followed by up to $35.00 per bag. So, we made it happen! This coffee is truly one of the highlights of the Idle Hands menu for 2024. We’re thrilled to share the entire experience with you!
